The fee for the citizenship test — it applies first to tests conducted in 2027

The ordinance sets SEK 2,000 per sitting, but the transitional provision says the fee applies for the first time to tests conducted in 2027. The 2026 test was free of charge.
What the ordinance says
Under the ordinance on the citizenship test (2026:451) § 6, in force from 6 June 2026, the fee is SEK 2,000 per sitting, payable to UHR.
From when does the fee apply?
The ordinance's transitional provision is explicit: “The provision in § 6 is applied for the first time in respect of citizenship tests conducted in 2027.” The fee therefore does not apply to tests conducted during 2026. The August 2026 sitting was a trial test and was free of charge for participants.
Exemption
Under the second paragraph of § 6 the fee does not apply to a stateless person who has been granted refugee status or a travel document by a Swedish authority.
What UHR has published
UHR writes that “information about the registration fee will follow”. How the fee will be charged in practice at future sittings has therefore not been published, and we post no claimed payment process here.
What it means in practice
If you sit the test during 2026 it costs nothing. From tests conducted during 2027, each sitting costs SEK 2,000, and a retake costs the same again. We do not use that figure as an argument before it applies.
Always check the current amount and payment terms with UHR before registering.
