Failed the citizenship test — what happens now?

Independent practice service. Not affiliated with UHR or Migrationsverket, and not an official service.

You can demonstrate the knowledge again through a new registration. What that means for your application is decided by the Migration Agency, not UHR and not us.

First: this is not the end

UHR states that someone who does not pass may be given the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge again, and that a new registration for the next sitting is then required. No cap on the number of attempts has been published.

Questions about what a failed result means for your application belong with the Migration Agency. It is the Migration Agency that handles the case and decides who sits the test. We cannot, and should not, comment on your case.

The practical side

  • A new registration is required. The result does not automatically carry over to the next sitting.
  • You still need the letter. Registration requires a letter from the Migration Agency, exactly as the first time.
  • The date of the next sitting has not been published. UHR states that information will come on uhr.se during the autumn. Follow the status page.
  • The cost. The 2026 test was free of charge. From tests conducted during 2027 the fee is SEK 2,000 per sitting under ordinance (2026:451) § 6, with an exemption for stateless people granted refugee status or a travel document by a Swedish authority. UHR has not yet published how the fee is charged.

How to make the second attempt a different attempt

What rarely helps is reading the whole material from the beginning again. What helps is knowing which of the thirteen areas were missing and spending the time there.

  1. Take the diagnostic. It takes six minutes and splits the result by area instead of giving a single number.
  2. Pick out the areas where you had none or one correct. That is where the points are.
  3. Re-read exactly those chapters of Sverige i fokus and test yourself immediately afterwards, chapter by chapter.
  4. Take a mock exam only once you have covered the gaps — not before, when it just measures the same thing again.

Two things we do not do

We do not promise that you will pass, and we publish no pass rate of our own. We have no such data, and anyone showing it without being able to say where it comes from has invented it.

Always check what applies to your own case directly with the Migration Agency. This page is a summary of published information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can you retake the citizenship test?

UHR states that someone who does not pass may be given the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge again and then needs to make a new registration for the next sitting. No cap on the number of attempts has been published.

Does a retake cost money?

The 2026 test was free of charge. Under ordinance (2026:451) § 6 the fee is SEK 2,000 per sitting, and that provision applies for the first time to tests conducted in 2027. UHR writes that information about the registration fee will follow.

Will my citizenship application be refused if I do not pass the test?

The Migration Agency processes and decides on your application. What a failed test result means in your particular case must be checked with the Migration Agency. We give no legal advice.
