How to prepare before the letter from the Migration Agency arrives

You cannot register yourself, and you do not know when the letter will arrive. The only thing you control is how much you know when it does.
The situation, without euphemism
You have applied for Swedish citizenship. If the Migration Agency judges that you need to demonstrate your knowledge through the test, you receive a letter. Only then can you register with UHR. You cannot speed up the letter, you cannot register in advance, and nobody — including us — can do it for you.
What you do decide entirely yourself is how much you know on the day the letter lands.
That is why time is the risk
At the first sitting the window was short. According to press reporting, registration closed on 2 July and the test was written on 15 August. Places were limited: around 1,000 people were called, while an estimated 34,000 are expected to need the test. UHR has published nothing about the next sitting beyond that information will come during the autumn.
If you only start reading when the letter arrives, the wait for the test day is your study time. If you have read beforehand, the same weeks are revision instead of first learning. That is the whole difference, and it costs nothing to take.
Five things you can do today
- Check whether it even applies to you. The knowledge requirement applies as a general rule to people aged 16 to 66, and anyone who can show the knowledge with approved grades is normally not referred to the test. See the guide Who does not have to take the citizenship test?
- Download the material. Sverige i fokus is free on uhr.se, runs to 48 pages and also exists as audio, one track per chapter. It is the only material UHR states the test is based on.
- Find out where you stand. Take the free diagnostic. It takes about six minutes and shows which of the thirteen areas you already know and which you do not. It gives no prediction about the exam — there is no pass mark to compare against.
- Spend the time on the numbers. The chapters with dates and exact facts — 349 members of the Riksdag, 290 municipalities, 21 regions, the four per cent threshold — are the ones that cost points, because you cannot reason your way to them.
- Watch the status page. The next sitting is updated the same day UHR publishes anything, with a change log showing exactly what changed and when.
A reasonable six-week plan
If you want a structure: one chapter a day gives you the whole material in under two weeks. Test yourself immediately after each chapter — it is the checking that sticks, not the reading. Then spend the remaining weeks on the areas where you actually lose points, not on the ones you already know.
What not to do
- Do not plan around a test date nobody has published.
- Do not trust a pass mark no authority has set.
- Do not pay anyone for help with the citizenship application itself believing it affects the test. It does not, and it is not our service either.
Frequently asked questions
Can I register for the citizenship test myself?
No. The Migration Agency decides who sits the test, and you can only register after you have received a letter from the Migration Agency. No private service can register you.
How much time do I have between the letter and the test day?
That has not been published and it can vary. At the first sitting, press reporting puts the close of registration on 2 July and the test day on 15 August, a little over six weeks later.
What should I read?
UHR states that the test is based on the study material Sverige i fokus, produced by UHR together with the National Agency for Education. It can be downloaded free from uhr.se and also exists as audio files.
