Step 2 of the language test is to be held by 1 October 2027 at the latest
In February 2026 the government decided that the citizenship test is introduced in three steps. Step two is reading and listening comprehension in Swedish, by 1 October 2027. Step three has no date.
In February 2026 the government amended the assignment for the citizenship test. Under the government’s decision the test is to be developed and introduced in three steps instead of two:
- Step 1 — a test of basic knowledge about Swedish society (civics), to be held for the first time by 17 August 2026 at the latest. That step is done: the test was held in August 2026.
- Step 2 — a test of reading and listening comprehension in Swedish, to be held by 1 October 2027 at the latest.
- Step 3 — writing and speaking. No date has been published.
What is not decided
The format of the language test has not been published: not the number of tasks, not the duration, not a level as a fixed requirement. Level references appearing in inquiries and proposals should be read as proposals, not as a confirmed test format.
What you can do today
You cannot prepare for a test whose format does not exist. What can be prepared for is the civics test, which has both an official study material and a completed sitting. Medborgarklar covers that test only, and the language test is not included in our purchase.
